Back at School

Yesterday was our first day back at school. If you can call it that. We sort of ease into the new year with a three hour orientation followed by a long weekend.

Sarah is starting her Jr year.  Even though next year she will have to write, present and defend a thesis, this is considered the hardest year at Trinitas. Emily has officially left the grammar stage and as a 7th grader has entered the logic phase. Abby is in 4th which begins a new era in school life where much more independence is required. This will be an interesting year for her. Abby is, how can I say it…somewhat scatterbrained loose in her thinking so some maturing will be in order. But she is smart so I have no doubt she’ll be fine. Claire is in K5 and is super excited to be going back to school. There is something rather poignant about my last child heading into kindergarten. (Yes, I know she did the whole K4 thing last year but this is different. K4 was optional and now there is no turning back.)

I started making a quilt a few weeks back and I learned a couple of things. One, the idea of sewing a quilt is much more romantic in my head than the actual reality of sewing a quilt. It’s work. Two, bobbins are the devil’s plaything. Three, my attention span is pretty short. So what was originally supposed to be a big comfy wrap up in and read a good book on a rainy day quilt turned into a I’d like to be finished so Claire now has a handmade napping blanket for school. My binding got a little wonky, as did some of my lines, but she doesn’t care. All she knows is that Momma made her a blanket. (I’ll probably do the whole quilt thing again despite reasons one, two and three. There is something about the colors and piecing together that draws me.)

So, yesterday was the girls orientation and last night was parent orientation. And get this. Rob goes every year and I stay home. I’ve always thought he had to be there because he is a board member. But it turns out he isn’t there as a board member…just as a parent. I found that to be really sweet of him. Of course he does bring home a huge packet of paperwork that has to be filled out and hands it to me. I think he may consider it an even swap. Every year I vow not to wait until the last minute to get all the forms filled out but I’m not very good at keeping that promise to myself. We’ll have to see if this year is any different.

It will be good to get back into the swing of things although I will miss having all my chicks home. I’m not one of those mom’s that can’t wait for her kids to get back into school. I like my kids and I enjoy their company. And we have worked pretty hard over the years to make sure they enjoy each other’s company. Plus I think having a pool helped 🙂

Sam and I will start his schooling on Tuesday when the girls go back. I have some neat things in mind for him

but honestly, I still haven’t figured out what to use for his math yet. One thing that he is excited about is that we are turning over Sam’s Family to him. We decided that it would be a great tool for his grammar and writing skills. And, for the first time Sam will do the boni libri program that the girls do each year.

Boni Libri is Latin for good book and is the reading program at the school They receive a reading medal at the end of the year for tracking at least six hundred minutes of reading a month. I am combining Sam’s with Book Adventure to motivate him a little more. I used the school’s suggested reading list and made sure they are on the site for him to quiz.

It is going to be a good year.

Of Butterfly Wings and Hope

Have you ever noticed the long spindly legs on a butterfly? Me either until I was looking through some pictures I took at a butterfly garden a few weeks ago.

I guess I’m usually distracted by the fantastic colors found in their wings.
All that yellow with spots of blue and then those little smidgens of orange. Then there are the intricate patterns that trace a delicate path across their wings.
It’s no wonder that these little guys are viewed as creatures of hope and new life.

The last image I want to share is probably my favorite. Sometimes, when I take a picture the image itself reminds me of something or someone else. An easy and clear example of this is the above image. I knew when I took it that I would pair it with that verse. An easy match, right?

When I took this last image I knew it was something special. The angle I had to stand to get the shot and the position of the sun completely blew out all color and shape in the right side while creating a vibrant wash of color on the left. I still didn’t realize what it would, in essence, say but when I read this verse I knew they went together.

Moreover, the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day when the LORD binds up the brokenness of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow.  Isaiah 30:26

Brokenness comes to us in this world. Pain is a stark reality of our fallen state. But God promises that healing will come and that He will bind up the wounds of His people. Hope will land gently bringing a rousing light and flourishing color to us once again.

Beginnings

The first sound I usually hear in my neighborhood in the morning is a garbage truck. It’s noise usually mingles with the coffee pot brewing as I slowly move from sleep to wakefulness. If I lay still long enough I can begin to make out the sounds of the birds at the feeder. With woods directly behind our home and a lake a few blocks away there are usually quite a few of the winged fellows having breakfast about the time I sip my first cup of coffee.

There. That sounds like a fine beginning for a new blog doesn’t it? I’ve been wanting to start a photography blog for a while now but was having the devil’s own time coming up with the first post. I’d bump ideas around but never got comfortable enough with one to actually sit down and write it out. Then I was reminded of a lifestyle blog circle that a group of photographers were doing and realized that it wasn’t too late for me to join. Besides having simply amazing photographers there are also monthly themes that will help with my spastic thoughts on this new blog of mine. If I am doing this correctly then another person will link to this blog post and I will be linking to Atlanta Wedding Photographer Zachary Long…who in turn will to another blog. If you are so inclined you can follow from blog to blog and have a virtual trip to neighborhoods literally all over the world. Aren’t you curious to see what the world looks like? I am but first let me take you on a short tour of where I live.

I’ve always been a little envious of those city neighborhoods you see on television. The ones with the grocery store and other local businesses all within  walking distance. Or the older well established ones with stately trees, large front lawns, and winding sidewalks. In actuality my little suburb isn’t anything like that.

But we do have a somewhat fancy entrance. I love the stone work and what you can’t see are these lovely ivy covered stone half walls on either side of the road. I’ve used them plenty of times as a location for portraits.

There are lots of trees and greenery that is well tended by somebody. As a matter of fact my most viewed image on flickr was taken right here last fall.

Along with those birds I mentioned earlier we will occasionally see rabbits. And bugs. I live in Florida so we see a lot of bugs. One of my girls was walking with me today as I took these pictures and she almost got up close and personal with this creature.

Have I mentioned that I really don’t care for spiders? I don’t at all but I was brave because I figured it would be an interesting addition to the other images. I quickly moved on to the lovely manicured lawns and pretty flower beds though.

I guess it’s probably only because of our homeowners association but everyone takes care of their yards and most of them have flowerbeds and decorative grass. My sweet husband enjoys the yard work and I enjoy the color and softness it adds. I do laugh that Rob sometimes sounds like a grumpy old man complaining about those darn kids walking on his grass 🙂

Our home is pretty modest by some standards and rather elaborate by others. It’s roomy and bright and plenty spacious which is good because we have people over a lot. The pool in the back is wonderful and so great to have in this heat. Truth be told I am quite content with my little suburban area and it has very little to do with the pretty well kept yards and nice stone entrance. I am blessed to be a well loved wife and a happy momma to five precious kids. I’d be just as happy living in a cardboard box or rundown shack as long as I was with them.

But probably not nearly as comfortable 🙂
